Kampung Kuantan is a more isolated location for watching fireflies in Kuala Selangor, the other more well-known firefly destination being Kampung Belimbing, which is near Pasir Penambang. Visitors and tourists can reach Kampung Kuantan through a narrow road that winds for 7 km through oil palm estates, traditional villages and fruit orchards from a turn-off at the main road leading to Kuala Selangor town. This same road also leads to Kampung Belimbing and ends at a junction to Pasir Penambang. Run by the government, Kampung Kuantan features simpler surroundings with a small shopping complex, children's playground and spacious car park lots, but no resort or restaurant. It has a much more quiet atmosphere, but on peak periods and public holidays, gets just as noisy and packed. Traditional wooden boats, called 'sampans', are used to ferry guests to the mangrove areas for firefly watching.
Motor engines do not drive these boats, which are instead pushed by long oars held by the boatman. As the currents are mostly slow along the river, the manually driven boats allow you to get closer to the fireflies, sitting among the mangroves, without the risk of getting stuck. The boats are small and carry only up to four people each but the tickets are priced much cheaper than Kampung Belimbing. A boat can be chartered at MYR40, which works out to MYR10 per person. The small shopping center here has a souvenir shop, restrooms and a nice walkway to the jetty. Even during the day, you can come here for a pleasant stroll and relax on benches placed around the jetty while observing the peaceful river scenery.
