Tanjung Karang is a small town located about 7 km north of Kuala Selangor town, right after Pasir Penambang. While there is little to do in town, hidden away in the countryside surroundings of Tanjung Karang are several fishing villages, most famous of them being Kampung Bagan Pasir. These traditional fishing villages, composed of Malay or Chinese communities, have some excellent seafood restaurants and provide fantastic views of the river, that is if you don't mind the stench of dead fish which constantly permeates the air. Bagan Pasir is one such riverside village made up mostly of Chinese fishermen. While most of them catch fish for a living, some of them have taken to running restaurants and created a reputation for themselves. Bagan Pasir is hence, an excellent alternative place to eat than the often overcrowded and overrated restaurants of Pasir Penambang.
Even if you're not here for the dining opportunities, the village is filled with fascinating sights. Many of the homes are traditionally built, perching themselves across the muddy shore on narrow stilts some meters above the ground. At high tide, the surroundings below become inundated with murky water that recedes at low tide, revealing crab holes, mud and litter. To get around, visitors have to navigate through a maze of wooden bridges and platforms that lead from home to home and jetty to jetty. In the evening, countless fishing vessels return and anchor themselves next to the village along the river, while the setting sun bathes them in a golden hue. The fishermen then pile up their catch of the day on rickety platforms, but will gladly sell you some if asked. Three restaurants can be found in Bagan Pasir, which are Suang Le River, Tanjung Karang and Restoran Makanan Laut Lucky; all provide good Chinese seafood and a peaceful environment. |
